A COMMUNITY fundraising appeal has been launched to help repair a war memorial at St Alban’s Church in Bewsey, Warrington, following an act of vandalism which left the historic memorial damaged.

Local resident Stephen Burke has launched a crowdfunding campaign with a target of £5,000 to help fund the restoration work and ensure the memorial can continue to serve as a place of remembrance.

The damage has caused considerable upset among those connected with the church and the wider community, with the memorial serving as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in defence of the country.
Launching the appeal, Stephen said: “Our community needs your help.
“Following the heartbreaking vandalism of the war memorial at St Albans Church, we are coming together to raise funds to help repair the damage and restore this important place of remembrance.
“This memorial is far more than just stone. It stands as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.
“To see a place of such historical and emotional significance damaged is deeply upsetting, not just for those connected to the church, but for the entire community.
“We cannot undo what has happened, but together we can put things right.”

Stephen said the aim was to raise sufficient funds to support the restoration and ensure future generations could continue to visit the memorial to remember, reflect and pay their respects.
He added: “Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this page would mean the world.
“Let’s show that acts of vandalism will never outweigh the kindness, generosity and community spirit of local people.
“They gave their tomorrow for our today. The least we can do is protect their memory.
“Thank you for your kindness, generosity and support.
“Lest We Forget.”
The appeal has a target of £5,000, with residents, businesses and anyone wishing to support the restoration being encouraged to contribute.

Meanwhile a 42-year-old local man suspected of committing the damage has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
