A suspect has been identified and detained under the Mental Health Act following a police investigation into the vandalism of the St Alban’s Church war memorial at Bewsey, Warrington.

Following Warrington LPU’s investigation into the vandalism of the war memorial at St Alban’s church, a 42-year-old local man has been detained under the mental health act.
The damage was discovered at 9.23am on Sunday 1 November by a member of the congregation. Enquiries established that there have been several incidents in the area and officers believe the damage may have occurred between 6pm and 10pm on Friday 30th October.

Chief Inspector Joseph McNally, Warrington LPU, said: “We understand the concern this incident has caused within the community, and I hope that now we have identified the suspect through an extensive and fast-moving investigation, parishioners and residents will be somewhat reassured.”

Meanwhile a community fundraiser has been launched to help carry out the repairs by local resident Stephen Burke.
He posted on a crowdfunding page which aims to raise £5,000:
“Our community needs your help.
“Following the heartbreaking vandalism of the war memorial at St Albans Church, we are coming together to raise funds to help repair the damage and restore this important place of remembrance.
“This memorial is far more than just stone. It stands as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.
“To see a place of such historical and emotional significance damaged is deeply upsetting, not just for those connected to the church, but for the entire community.
“We cannot undo what has happened, but together we can put things right.
“We are hoping to raise enough money to support the restoration of the memorial and ensure it remains a place where future generations can remember, reflect and pay their respects.
“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this page would mean the world.
“Let’s show that acts of vandalism will never outweigh the kindness, generosity and community spirit of local people.
“They gave their tomorrow for our today. The least we can do is protect their memory.
“Thank you for your kindness, generosity and support. ❤️
