WARRINGTON Wolves may have to win their final game at home to Toulouse to secure top three after going down at nearest rivals Wakefield.
A top two spot is now all but out of the question for Sam Burgess’ side, with Wakefield pulling within two points of them in the chase for third place, albeit Warrington boast a points difference advantage of 37.
A tit-for-tat game was all square at 18-all, before Wakefield, coached by former Wolves boss Daryl Powell, pulled clear to win 25-18.
Warrington had led the way in the first half, scoring two penalties to lead 4-0, and they took a 14-6 advantage in to half time after responding to Tom Johnstone’s try with scores through Josh Smith and Matty Ashton.
Their six-match winning run came to an end though as Isaiah Vagana twice powered over.
Although Albert Hopoate’s try levelled things up at 18-all, Cameron Scott’s try, converted by Max Jowitt and then a Mason Lino drop goal put the game beyond Warrington’s reach.
A win would have moved them level on points with either Wigan or Leeds, who meet tonight.
