THE mother of Warrington woman Lucy Harrison has renewed her campaign for justice after appearing on national breakfast television to highlight her daughter’s death and call for the case to be reopened in the United States.
Jane Coates appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Tuesday morning to speak about the death of her 23-year-old daughter, who was shot while visiting her father at his home in Prosper, Texas, in January 2025.
Mrs Coates continues to campaign for the Texas authorities to review the case after a Cheshire coroner concluded that Lucy had been unlawfully killed.
Senior Cheshire Coroner Jacqueline Devonish recorded a conclusion of gross negligence manslaughter earlier this year, finding that Lucy died after her father, Kris Harrison, recklessly discharged a loaded handgun while handling it in her presence.
The inquest heard that Mr Harrison admitted firing the fatal shot but maintained the shooting was a tragic accident while showing Lucy his Glock 9mm pistol. Evidence also revealed he had consumed alcohol before the incident.
Despite the coroner’s findings, a grand jury in Collin County, Texas, decided there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges, a decision that has devastated Lucy’s family.
Speaking on national television, Mrs Coates said her family remains determined to seek justice for Lucy and urged the American authorities to take another look at the evidence.
She has consistently argued that the original police investigation failed to properly examine key evidence and believes the case warrants a fresh review.
The tragedy has attracted widespread attention on both sides of the Atlantic, with campaigners questioning how the findings of a UK inquest could differ so markedly from the outcome of the criminal investigation in Texas.
Lucy, described by her family as a kind, caring and ambitious young woman with her whole life ahead of her, had travelled to Texas with her boyfriend to visit her father when the fatal shooting occurred.
Her death sent shockwaves through Warrington, where friends, family and the wider community have continued to support the campaign for justice.
Mrs Coates has been backed by her local MP Sarah Hall and supporters throughout her campaign and says she will continue to press the Texas authorities until she receives the answers she believes her daughter deserves.
The family’s campaign remains focused on securing a review of the investigation in the hope that those responsible for examining the case will reconsider the evidence surrounding Lucy’s death.
