Warrington see off Widnes in town derby to kick-off pre-season

WARRINGTON Town opened up their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 4-0 win away at Widnes Town.

New signing Jack Goodwin scored two well-taken goals in either half, while former Premier League man and current Yellows assistant manager Craig Noone scored and helped set up two in a second half cameo playing at left-back.

There was also a goal for another new signing, Ewan Bange, who led the line for an hour.

Paul Carden handed six of his summer recruits a start at the DCBL Stadium, and it took 16 minutes to break down a Widnes side, starting up again this summer after the old club withdrew from the Northern Premier League on the eve of last season.

A superb ball across from Scott Butler, playing at right-back, was brought down by Goodwin who cut inside and fired a right-foot shot in to the far corner.

As has been the case at the FIFA World Cup, there were two hydration breaks in the middle of each half, though that was merely due to the warm weather rather than it becoming the norm.

Fresh from the announcement of his permanent return to the Yellows, Joe Rodwell-Grant came close with a speculative effort from 45 yards as the visitors led 1-0 at half-time.

There were three substitutions at the break, with Bobby Bjork moving from central midfield to right back, and it again took a quarter of an hour to find a goal, Noone doing well to keep the ball in at the byline and Trialist A put it on a plate for Bange to score.

Noone then helped set up a second goal for Goodwin with a clever pass with the outside of his left-foot, Goodwin driving at his man and then curling a beauty in to the top corner with his right-foot.

Noone, who made four substitute appearances in the 2024/25 season, got on the scoresheet when he was found in space on the box, cut on to his right and sidefooted in to the corner.

The Yellows play away at Atherton LR on Tuesday night before their first home pre-season game against Chester on Saturday.

Warrington Town: Hewelt (Roper), Butler (Vela), J Doyle (Noone), Bjork (H Denton), McNally, Gumbs (Lloyd), Rodwell-Grant (R Denton), Earl (Morgan), Bange (Murphy), Scanlon (Trialist A), Goodwin (Williamson)
