Warrington marks Armed Forces Week

WARRINGTON Borough Council is marking Armed Forces Week this week by raising the Armed Forces flag at the Town Hall, in recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

The flag-raising ceremony, which took place today, Monday 22 June, highlights the borough’s ongoing support for serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families.
It also builds on the council’s commitment, marked later this week by the ceremonial signing of a refreshed Armed Forces Covenant on Wednesday 24 June, reaffirming its pledge to treat the Armed Forces community fairly and with respect.
The updated Armed Forces Covenant strengthens the council’s commitment to the Armed Forces community.
The covenant reinforces the council’s commitment to upholding its duties to support the needs of the Armed Forces community, particularly across housing, education and healthcare.
Replacing the previous 2018 Cheshire Armed Forces Partnership document, the refreshed covenant provides a more focused and locally responsive approach for Warrington.

A key element of the new covenant is the creation of a Warrington Armed Forces Covenant Partnership. This will bring together local partners across health, education, housing, employment and community services to deliver coordinated support and drive a shared action plan, while continuing to support initiatives such as the Veteran Support Centre in Orford.
The council’s commitments under the covenant include promoting an Armed Forces-friendly culture, supporting employment pathways for veterans, backing reservists and cadet volunteers, and upholding civic and commemorative duties.
Cllr Jean Flaherty, Deputy Leader and cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure, said: “Our Armed Forces community makes an extraordinary contribution to our country, and it is only right that we continue to stand firmly behind them.
“We will be using Armed Forces Week to reaffirm our respect, recognition and gratitude for those who serve—and our commitment to ensuring they face no disadvantage as a result of their service.”
