LYMM resident Jon Durnian – an ophthalmic surgeon in Liverpool – is running three marathons in three days to raise money for Vision4Children (V4C, a charity working for blind children in the developing world.
Of the world’s 1.4 million blind children, more than 50 per cent are needlessly blind – and 1.2 million of them live in Africa and Asia.
The most common treatable cause is childhood cataract – and in the developing world it costs just £50-£100 perform cataract surgery.
Jon (pictured) said: “Although my routine work, hopefully, helps the local population’s visual problems, I cannot really help those in the developing world.
“I thought I’d take this opportunity to work with a charity I know and trust to try and help the treatment of these patients in the developing world.”
Jon’s three marathons make up the “Anglesey Challenge” and involve running around the coast of Anglesey.
V4C are committed to reducing unnecessary childhood blindness in the developing work by improving treatment, developing eye-care services and supporting parents and carers.
