WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols showed her support for the local deaf community at a fundraising cheese and wine evening organised by the Warrington & District Society for Deaf People.

The event featured a performance by the Warrington BSL Signing Choir at the Warrington Deaf Hub on Wilson Patten Street.

Commenting on the event, Ms Nichols said: “A lovely evening at Warrington Deaf Hub with Cllr Lawrence Sheridan, who is currently working towards his BSL Level 2, at their Cheese and Wine Night tonight! After a difficult few day,s it was a delight to have so many friendly conversations, pick up some new sign language vocabulary, and to see a fantastic performance by the Warrington BSL Signing Choir.
“The Hub is such an amazing asset in our community, both for our Deaf and hard of hearing residents, and for the wider community – including running BSL courses and cafes to bridge between the two through facilitating learning the language and culture.
“I’m a member of the British Sign Language APPG, which is chaired by Jen Craft MP and the secretariat provided by the British Deaf Association – and our goal is to raise the profile of British Sign Language (BSL) in Parliament; to bring the voice of BSL signers into Westminster and to promote the aspirations of the signing community. It’s a pleasure to spend time with the community locally and learn about things which we can help push for in Parliament to make our country and our community more accessible for our Deaf friends, and I look forward to my next visit.”
