A WOMAN who falsely claimed more than £40,000 benefit was given a suspended prison sentence at Warrington Crown Court.
Jill Obramonti, 46, of Grasmere Avenue, Orford, was also ordered to repay the money and remain at her current address and placed under a 7pm-7am curfew for six months.
She pleaded guilty to deliberately failing to inform Warrington Borough Council and the Department of Works and Pensions that her husband had started work.
The court was told the woman was overpaid housing benefit amounting to £5,745, council tax benefit of £1,533 and income support of £33,954 – a total of £41,232.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “We are introducing new and more intelligent ways to catch fraudsters. The next year will see more benefit thieves caught than ever before. We’re closing in on benefit thieves with every means at our disposal”.
