WARRINGTON-based Ascot Mortgages has raised over £6,000 for Cancer Research UK, by completing a 26 mile ‘Walk for Cancer’ challenge.

In the build up to the main event, the team from Ascot Mortgages undertook several gruelling training sessions in preparation for the big day, with some members suffering chest infections, weak ankles and sore feet.

Despite the training injuries, the team began their walk from Southport to Liverpool at 4.30am and successfully completed it many hours later, raising a staggering £6,523.61 including gift aid through their Virgin Money Giving page.

David Gibson, Director of Ascot Mortgages said: “I’m so proud of my team, despite some nasty injuries and illnesses they smashed today’s walk for Cancer Research from Southport to Liverpool. Nagina was busy working the crowds collecting money right up until the darkness fell. True grit. We smashed the target of £6000!”

The team also held a raffle draw at their Warrington office, with prizes such as tickets to the Liverpool Philharmonics Christmas Show, Miller and Carter £50 voucher, Brewster’s Hairdressing voucher, Revlon Hair products and more.

Cancer effects not just people but much-loved animals and pets. Ollie, who belongs to a friend of the team at Ascot Mortgages has suffered with his joints since being a puppy and was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia, which required multiple surgeries.

One evening Ollie was rushed to the emergency vets. The vet took scans and a biopsy and the advice was that it could be a torn ligament but at worst, Cancer. The initial results were negative, but that was short-lived and they were told that he did in fact have a tumour and it had spread to his lymph nodes.

As a result, Ollie has had his lymph nodes removed as well as one of his back legs. Ollie is now taking daily chemo tablets and being one leg down is not stopping him living life to the fullest and still enjoys swimming and playing with his Brother, Frank.
