UPDATED: COVID-19 surge testing is to be introduced in Warrington in a bid to tackle the rising infection rates, with another 65 new cases confirmed today, Monday, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the easing of all lockdown restrictions will be put back until July 19.
The government has announced that Warrington will receive additional testing support along with Birmingham, Blackpool, Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Liverpool City Region to combat the highly transmissive Delta variant, first identified in India.
This will include surge testing, tracing, isolation support and maximising vaccine uptake, which will be rapidly deployed in the areas.
Surge testing is increased testing (including door-to-door testing in some areas) and enhanced contact tracing in specific locations and can look different depending on assessment of local requirements. It involves testing of people who do not have any symptoms of COVID-19.
There may also be targeted activity to drive up vaccine uptake amongst eligible cohorts.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed the easing of all lockdown restrictions will be put back until July 19, due to the increasing rates. But limits of 30 people attending weddings and wakes has been lifted, as long as social distancing is maintained at venues.
Meanwhile the 65 (50) new COVID-19 cases take the total number of confirmed cases in Warrington since the start of the pandemic to 18,474 (18,409).
Cases in Warrington for the last seven days continue to rise, with 248 (218) – 118.1 (103.8) per 100,000 population over a seven-day period– which is now well above the national rate of 67.5 (64.7) per 100,000, which also continues to rise.
Warrington & Halton Hospitals has reintroduced its daily reporting of figures Monday-Friday, excluding Bank Holidays.
