Warrington is celebrating 20 years as a Fairtrade borough as part of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.
Over the past two decades, Warrington’s Fairtrade movement has organised hundreds of events and campaigns aimed at raising awareness of fairer global trade.
Activities have included Fairtrade Fortnight events, Big Brew fundraising activities, school projects, market promotions and community awareness campaigns.
The Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group has played a key role in bringing together residents, schools, businesses, faith groups and community organisations to support Fairtrade and promote better trading conditions for farmers and workers around the world.
In 2019, Warrington also made a significant contribution to a national Fairtrade Foundation campaign calling for living incomes for cocoa farmers, collecting almost 1,000 signatures towards a UK-wide petition, which formed part of a national campaign that secured more than 50,000 signatures.
Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Sagheer Zaman, said: “I am delighted to congratulate everyone involved in Warrington’s Fairtrade journey as we celebrate 20 years as a Fairtrade Borough.
“Warrington has successfully renewed its Fairtrade status year after year, reflecting our long-standing commitment to ensuring producers receive a fair price for their work.
“This anniversary is a testament to the dedication of a number of local residents and community organisations, with the Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group being a driving force of local activity.
“As Mayor, I am proud that Warrington continues to lead by example, and I would like to thank all those who have helped make our borough such a strong and enduring supporter of Fairtrade.”
Rev Caroline Batey, a member of the Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group, said Fairtrade Fortnight was an opportunity for people to think about the farmers, workers and communities behind everyday products.
She said: “Throughout these two weeks, we’re focusing on the theme of Fair Pay and encouraging people to remember a simple truth that fair pay matters because everyone deserves the chance to live well.
“Warrington has been a Fairtrade town for 20 years with the continuous promotion by the Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group, along with the support of the council and many other partners.
“You can help us build on the good work done so far, by getting involved with the work of the steering group and by buying products that have the Fairtrade mark.”
Fairtrade Fortnight runs until October 4, 2026.
