A Warrington resident has been successfully prosecuted following a council investigation into a fly-tipping incident in the Fairfield and Howley ward.
Catalin Nechita, of Hardy Street, Warrington, pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates’ Court after council officers identified him as responsible for illegally depositing waste.
The case followed the discovery of a fly-tipped sofa to the rear of Hardy Street. During enquiries, council officers identified CCTV coverage in the area and reviewed footage relating to the incident.
The footage showed Nechita making several trips from the front of his property, carrying a sofa through a nearby alleyway before depositing it at the rear of the address.
The matter was heard at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 29 July 2026. During proceedings, Nechita stated that he had left the sofa outside his property while awaiting collection by a friend. However, he accepted that it should not have been left on the street, even temporarily, and pleaded guilty to the fly-tipping offence.
Taking into account an early guilty plea, the court imposed a fine of £666, reduced from £1,000, together with a victim surcharge of £266 and prosecution costs of £412, bringing the total financial penalty to £1,344.
The case serves as a reminder that residents have a responsibility to ensure unwanted household items are disposed of correctly and not left on the highway or in locations where they may cause a nuisance or encourage further waste dumping.
Cllr John Kerr-Brown, cabinet member for environment, housing and public protection, said: “Fly-tipping and the unlawful disposal of waste has a negative impact on local communities and the environment, and places an unnecessary burden on public resources.
“This case demonstrates that we will thoroughly investigate environmental offences and make use of all available evidence, including CCTV footage, to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
“We would encourage residents to ensure they dispose of bulky items responsibly and use authorised services when arranging for waste to be removed. By working together, we can help keep Warrington clean and safe for everyone.”
