WHAT started as a Warrington family’s quest to channel grief into a lasting legacy in memory of Frank Hawley has evolved into a powerhouse community movement, raising more than £27,000 for St Rocco’s Hospice.
The Frank Hawley Challenge was founded in memory of Frank Hawley, a revered teacher at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School and a well-known rugby league match official.
Remembered across Warrington for his humour, generosity, and kindness, Frank’s family launched the initiative to give back to St Rocco’s Hospice following the exceptional care he and his family received during his final days.
What started as a singular fundraising concept has grown exponentially through a diverse mix of endurance challenges, quizzes, social nights, and community running events.
Now Andy Hawley is planning his next challenges, including four ultras in four days in memory of his uncle.
Andy has been the public face and physical engine of the campaign, who has pushed his body to the limit through half marathons and ultra-distance endurance trials.
He has been supported by Joan Ayres: The logistical heartbeat of the operation. Having lost her husband Kevin to cancer at St Rocco’s Hospice, Joan channels her first-hand understanding of the hospice’s vital care into managing the complex administrative work behind every event.
The Next Chapter: 4 Days, 4 Ultras! The movement has proved that positive growth can emerge from profound loss. Organisers have announced they are expanding their ambitions with their most grueling event yet:
The flagship challenge will feature local participants tackling consecutive ultra-distance routes across the region. People can sign up for individual events. Additionally, the group is hosting a high-energy Step Up for St. Rocco’s Step Challenge on Tuesday, 2nd of June 2026, from 5:00 pm, where supporters will conquer the stadium steps at the iconic Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Every pound raised helps St Rocco’s Hospice cover its daily operating costs to care for local patients. The community can back the cause via the following official channels.
Community members looking to enter events, purchase social night tickets, or monitor the ultra marathon progress can join the official community hub on The Frank Hawley Challenge Facebook Group.
