Runners raise £12,000 with “Goggins” challenge – and expect to raise more

LYMM Runners have so far raised more than £12,000 with this year’s “Goggins” challenge – and expect to equal or exceed the £18,820 they raised with last year’s event.

The money goes to The Walton Centre Charity and the challenge saw runners complete the demanding format of four miles, every four hours, for 48 hours, which totalled 48 miles.

The sponsor this year was Kids Planet Nurseries, whose chief executive officer Clare Roberts took part in the challenge.

She said:  “Taking part in the Goggins charity run in Lymm was a brilliant way to support a great cause while joining in with some of the runs alongside fantastic people. It really captured that strong, uplifting local community spirit that makes events like this so special.”

The event was again organised by club member Richard Waggitt and his team. It was inspired by his own experience of life-changing neurosurgery at The Walton Centre in Liverpool a few years ago. Several other members of the club have also received treatment there in the past.

Rich said: “From 4 to 48 miles, from the faster runners to the power walkers, the Goggins ultramarathon format is inclusive and accessible to all. It shows the very best of the Lymm Runners community and how one club and over 100 people can make a real difference”.

Twenty-two runners completed the full 48-hour endurance test, while 105 others took part in one or more of the four-mile runs. Throughout the weekend, groups wearing the distinctive blue ‘Goggins’ t-shirts became a familiar sight around Lymm, with Maple Lodge Scout Hut on Pepper Street serving as the event hub. An impressive total of 2,144 miles was covered in all. The challenge concluded with runners, friends and supporters all gathering to cheer participants across the finish line.

Madeleine Fletcher, head of Fundraising at The Walton Centre Charity, said the total would “make a real difference to patients and staff.”
