Delight over decision to withdraw CPS Centre planning application

DELIGHT has been expressed over the decision by the applicants to withdraw a controversial planning application involving the CPS Centre at Culcheth.

The application was withdrawn shortly before members of Warrington Borough Council’s Development Management Committee were to discuss an application concerning new roof lights, a bin store and cycle rack, as part of future proposals to convert the premises into residential accommodation.

Local Cllr. Matt Smith said: “I’m absolutely delighted to hear this news. Our community really pulled together to oppose this potential threat to the CPS centre. The residents who organised and attended the community meeting on Monday deserve our full appreciation. I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work a smaller number of people put in to research and write speeches for the meeting, which they didn’t get to present.
“The only disappointment is that the applicant waited until the eleventh hour to withdraw. They could have taken this step weeks ago when they saw the objections coming in.
“I believe we had strong arguments to present to the committee. I’m sure there will be further applications in the future, but for now, it’s clear our voices have been heard loud and clear! Thank you to everyone who has been involved; the connections we’ve made will be incredibly useful going forward.”
Cllr. Neil Johnson added: “This is great news for everyone in Culcheth. The strength of feeling amongst residents was unmissable. The applicant obviously heard our voices loud and clear!
“I want to thank everyone who worked with me to fight this application, and all those who submitted objections. People power won!
“I will now be working closely with the community to watch what happens next. As the independent voice of the village, I will strongly oppose any future applications which threaten the viability of Culcheth’s centre.”
The application followed on from more than 20 local traders being controversially evicted from the former shopping arcade premises earlier this year.
