M62 closed in both directions after lorry crashes into barrier causing large fuel spillage

THE M62 at Winwick, Warrington, was closed in both directions on Friday after a lorry crashed into a barrier causing a large fuel spillage.

Delays of around 45 minutes were being reported with severe traffic congestion across the north side of Warrington.

The crash is understood to have occured at around 4.30am on Friday, June 13 at junction 9 of the motorway near Newton Road (Winwick).
The motorway was closed in both directions with congestion reaching to junction 7 (Rainhill stoops) heading eastbound. Queues were also backed up to junction 10 (Croft Interchange) heading westbound.
According to traffic management system, a lorry hit a barrier and leaked fuel onto the M62.
Congestion was described as severe, with normal traffic conditions expected at around 13:30.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “At 3am on Friday 13 June, police were called to reports of a collision on A49, Winwick Road, Warrington.
“The collision involved a lorry which had collided with the railings on the bridge over the M62.
“The M62 is currently closed in both directions as a result, with a diversion up and over the junction.
“The closure is expected to stay in place for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
“There are not believed to be reports of any injuries.”
UPDATE 5 pm – The Eastbound carriageway has reopened but the westbound remained closed for resurfacing works with delays of around 60 minutes.
