THE 10th annual “Big Litter Clean” held by Warrington’s New Cut Heritage and Ecology Trail group resulted in 20 bags of rubbish being collected.

Covering the full length of the New Cut Canal at Woolston, which runs nearly two miles from Paddington Lock to Woolston Lock, the pick was carried out by more than 20 volunteers.
They started in pleasant early spring weather but later contended with strengthening cold winds.
The event is organised at this time of year before the undergrowth has started to increase in foliage and those hidden pieces of rubbish can be seen and disposed of.
Largest piece of rubbish collected was a worn-out lorry tyre.
The pick was preceded by a full litter pick of Paddington Meadows, a nature reserve surrounded by footpaths and very popular with dog walkers, runners and walkers.
The event, as usual, was held in conjunction with Warrington Borough Council who arranged collection and disposal of rubbish collected.

Much of the high viz clothing and tools used on the day were sponsored by local parish councils.
A spokesperson for the group said: “We are fortunate to have a group of volunteers that are willingly to give their time and enjoy the fellowship of other volunteers to clear up the mess that, unfortunately, a small minority of the public simply throw away.
Anyone who would like to help out with the group’s friendly work parties, bird and mammal surveys, litter picks, etc can contact them on e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] or visit the website www.newcuttrail.com
