Between 8 pm on Friday, April 4th and Sunday, 6th April at 4 pm, members of Lymm Runners raised almost £17,000 by completing a Goggins Ultra Marathon – that’s a 4-mile run every 4 hours for 48 hours – a total of 48 miles in 48 hours.
In the process, they smashed their original target of £10,000, thanks to the generosity of friends, family and Cuppello’s Coffee House, who also sponsored the distinctive blue t-shirts that became a familiar sight in the village at the weekend. And what’s more, donations are still coming in!
The Run was the idea of Lymm Runner Rich Waggitt, who wished to raise funds for The Walton Centre Charity in Liverpool, in grateful recognition of the life-changing Neurosurgery work they have done for him. Rich commented: “Chatting with my friends at the Club after my surgery, it turns out I am not alone in having had interaction with The Walton Centre, I know of at least 6 other Club members who have had life-changing involvement with this sector-leading specialist neuro-surgery centre.”
While twenty of the more seasoned club members did the whole thing, catching naps where they could, many others opted to run just one or more of the 4-mile distances. They were able to enjoy the food, drink and general party atmosphere at the hut in between, thanks to the Club volunteers who helped throughout the 48 hours.
The final Sunday run ended in a (sweaty) celebration as over 100 runners, friends, family and Lymm locals cheered as the runners and walkers finished up the slope of Maple Lodge before the total was revealed.
