WARRINGTON-based Miller Homes is marking six months since the latest intake joined its Early Talent Scheme, highlighting its dedication to nurturing the next generation of industry professionals.

Designed to provide hands-on experience and structured learning, the programme has already made a tangible impact on participants Mia Ullmer and Billy Jepson, who have been gaining valuable skills and growing in confidence within the company.
Billy, 19, a Commercial Trainee, and Mia, 18, a Technical Trainee, joined Miller Homes in September 2024 and have spent the past six months gaining valuable insights into the construction industry. Reflecting on their experiences so far, both apprentices have highlighted how the scheme has accelerated their learning and prepared them for long-term careers in housebuilding.
Billy, who is currently working on the Thorley Glade development in Timperley alongside a senior surveyor Tracy Slann said: “I have learned a lot about the industry and my role as a Quantity Surveyor. The scheme has given me the confidence to manage day-to-day tasks, deal with sites, and understand key construction procedures. My team has been incredibly supportive, and I feel like I’ve made a great start to my career.”
Similarly, Mia has gained first-hand experience in technical processes and has played a vital role in preparing new sites for planning submissions. “When I first joined Miller Homes, I had very little industry knowledge, but now I have a strong foundation in architectural technology,” she explained. “I’ve learned how to use essential software like AutoCAD and have had the opportunity to work on a site from its design stage through to planning. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see a project progress.”

Miller Homes’ Early Talent Scheme is designed to provide structured learning and mentorship across various disciplines, from quantity surveying and technical roles to sales and business operations. With a strong focus on training and career progression, the company ensures that 5% of its workforce is made up of apprentices, trainees, and graduates.
In addition to hands-on site experience, the programme offers tailored mentoring, industry-recognised qualifications, and opportunities for career advancement. As Mia and Billy look forward to their next six months, both are eager to build on their current knowledge and take on greater responsibilities within their respective roles.
“I’m excited to develop my CAD skills further and learn new software like Revit, which will not only support my role but also my university studies,” said Mia. Meanwhile, Billy is keen to continue his journey towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor, adding: “I hope to strengthen my confidence and keep learning from my experienced colleagues. The support I receive every day has been invaluable.”
Both trainees encourage future applicants to embrace the learning process and take full advantage of the knowledge available to them. “You won’t learn everything at once, but if you stay patient and committed, you’ll succeed,” advised Billy. Mia echoed this sentiment, adding: “Always ask questions – the answers you gain will form the foundation of your knowledge.”
