THE league cricket season opens on April 19 for most clubs in the Warrington area – with top clubs Grappenhall and Warrington both anxious to make a strong start.
Grappenhall are aiming to gain immediate promotion back to the ECB premier division of the Cheshire County League after their relegation to division one last year.
Grappers could count themselves unlucky to go down last summer. If they had picked up just four more points that would have stayed in the top tier.
Their first game of the 2025 season will be at home to near neighbours Toft – who were also relegated from the premier division last term.
Anything can happen in the first match of the season, but Grappers have a history of starting the season well and on paper, at least, they should start favourites.
Although just one place above Toft last summer, they accumulated 191 points over the season, compared to Toft’s 163.
Warrington will be playing in division three of the county league after bouncing back from division one of the Cheshire Cricket League.
They had a superb season at the lower level last year and will be hoping to carry on their winning ways after just one season out of the county league.
Their first game will be at home to Hale Barns and it’s a game they will be hoping to win.
All the other Warrington area teams play in the Cheshire Cricket League.
In division one, Lymm Oughtrington Park will be hosting Irby. Division two will see Appleton hosting Aston.
Glazebury will be hosting Wistaston Village in division three.
All clubs in the Warrington area field more than one senior team – Warrington and Appleton each boast four XIs, Grappehall three and Glazebury two. So, weather permitting there should be home games for local fans to go and watch every Saturday
