WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols joined Woolston Rovers and the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation at Hillock Lane to discuss the future of grassroots rugby and how to secure investment that the club needs.
Charlotte was joined by Cllr Lawrence Sheridan and Cllr Una Gilham who are working alongside her to support Woolston Rovers being granted a long term lease of the pitch at Monks Sports and Social Club, as part of a wider drive for funding and security for the club.
In order to access grant funding from different organisations such as Sports England, clubs are required to show they have security of tenure at their playing grounds. This is one of the major hurdles facing Woolston Rovers Rugby League Club.
Ms Nichols said: “It was good to meet with Woolston Rovers Rugby League Club and the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation alongside Cllr Una Gilham and Cllr Lawrence Sheridan to discuss how to secure the investment the club needs into its facilities. Woolston Rovers are keen to grow, and to develop more opportunities for women and girls to take up the sport and to provide facilities for its existing teams and visiting clubs that they can be proud of. Rugby League is at the heart of who we are as a community and I’m hopeful that over the coming months working together to help the club achieve its ambitions”.
Woolston Rovers was founded in 1959 at Lido Country Club and for its first two seasons played without a pitch of their own.
Over the years the club has moved to different sites including Victoria Park and Bennetts Recreation Ground in Padgate, before moving to its current site at the Monks Sports and Social Club on Hillock Lane.
