Retirement homes plan divides a community

CONTROVERSIAL plans for 45 retirement apartments at Lymm have divided the local community – with more than half of those responding to a survey opposing the scheme.

This is revealed in documents submitted by developers McCarthy and Stone to Warrington Borough Council.
The development would consist of 26 one bedroom apartments and 19 two bedroom apartments in a three-storey block set in landscaped grounds at Watercress Farm.
Feedback to a community consultation exercise carried out by McCarthy and Stone prior to submitting a planning application revealed that 57.6 per cent of respondents objected to the scheme…

A further 24.2 per cent supported the scheme – with many expressing an interest in purchasing an apartment.
Another 18.2 per cent were unsure or adopted a neutral stance.
Many of the objectors were concerned about access to the development through the Dairy Farm estate and others pointed out the site is in the Green Belt. Some said there was no need for more retirement homes in Lymm.
But 66.7 per cent of respondents made negative responses when asked about the design and layout of the scheme – and there were no favourable comments.

McCarthy and Stone say they are pleased with the positive feedback, which is typical for one of their developments.
They say that while the site is current in the Green Belt, it has been allocated for housing – including retirement accommodation – in the borough council’s emerging local plan.
The planning application has now been submitted to the borough council and is being considered by planning officers.
