Hospices join forces for marathon hike through Cheshire countryside!

ST Rocco’s Hospice in Warrington has teamed up with East Cheshire Hospice to organise a unique fund-raising event involving a marathon hike between their two premises this summer.

With the cost-of-living increases and the appalling suffering in Ukraine, it is natural that local charities will take a hit in their fundraising activities, as people tighten their belts and look to contribute elsewhere.

To help alleviate this shortfall, the two hospices have combined their fundraising activities to arrange a unique event this summer.

St. Rocco’s hospice in Warrington and East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield have organised a marathon 26-mile hike between the two locations to take place in July. For those that might find this a bit daunting there is a half marathon option, that starts at the Cottons Hotel in Knutsford.

St. Rocco’s is also pleased to have Motorpoint Widnes support as the Headline sponsor for the hike.

St. Rocco’s CEO, Sonya Currey explained. “Walkers from St. Rocco’s will start at Macclesfield, or the Cottons Hotel and walk to St. Rocco’s in Warrington. Whilst those from East Cheshire will go the opposite way.

“The team has mapped the route out and this epic hike will take you on a course that offers outstanding Cheshire countryside views. Passing through scenic villages, hamlets, Victorian engineering, and townscape.

“After leaving East Cheshire Hospice it goes through the historic winding streets of Macclesfield. As you move towards Henbury and Monk’s Heath, the Capesthorne estate will be on your periphery. Followed by the incredible Peak District view as you pass through Chelford and Ollerton.

“After heading through Knutsford, you will then pass the beautiful Lymm Dam, a great place to have a break and enjoy the scenery. Next, you will trail along the Trans Pennine Way and then the impressive Manchester ship canal, the River Mersey, as you get closer to the finish. Finally, you will encounter Warrington town centre before crossing the finish line at St. Rocco’s.”

Sonya concluded, “Hospices cannot continue to assume people will keep supporting them and by arranging unique events like this it helps to keep our supporters motivated and passionate about the care we provide.

“I would encourage people to get together with friends and family to enjoy this amazing walk during the summer. I am taking part with a team of staff members from St. Rocco’s. The opportunity to be part of a bigger community team, all pulling together with one aim is totally compelling to me and I’m always humbled to be able to engage is such events.

Warrington Borough Council will also be supporting this event by providing transport for the marathon walkers and a team of staff taking part. It’s going to be a great day and I look forward to meeting the supporters of both Hospices on the walk.”
