Grappers seek promotion as cricket season starts

THE Cheshire cricket season gets underway today (Saturday) – with Warrington’s top club, Grappenhall travelling to Urmston.

Play is due to start at 12 noon and “Grappers” will be keen to get off to a winning start as they bid for promotion back to the RSK Cheshire County League ECB Premier division after spending the last two summers in division one.

Australian quick bowler Nick Woods is joining the club to play for the whole season after spending a season with Carlton Cricket Club, in Victoria. Nick is a 6ft 6 inch pace merchant with an impressive record in Australia.

He will complement Grappenhall youngster Lewis Porter, who has continued his development at Scarborough College. The pair will make a formidable new-ball partnership.

Grappers opening batsman Pete Barnes is taking over as 1st XI captain, succeeding Sam Guest.

Batsman Tom Higham has moved to the club from Warrington and spin bowler Kieran Lawton has also joined from Greater Manchester league side Flowery Fields at Hyde.
Warrington – anxious to get back to division one after being relegated last year – start their league season with a home game against Cheadle Hulme.

In the UKFast Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park get their season under way with a home game aginst Wilmslow.
Appleton will be at home to Westminster Park while Glazebury will entertain Kerridge.
