FOUR more COVID-19 deaths have sadly been reported at Warrington hospital over the weekend, while changes in reporting methods to include possible reinfections has seen an additional 3,732 cases added to the town’s figures.

The *3,732 (156) COVID-19 cases reported by the UK Health Security Agency in the latest daily data, takes the total number of cases recorded in Warrington since the start of the pandemic to 63,686 (59,954).

*New Metric: Figures for first episodes (equivalent to the pre-31 January 2022 case definition) and possible reinfections by specimen date have been added for England plus regions and local authorities within England which has inflated the daily figure.
As a result infection rate figures over a seven-day period have risen to 1,816 (1,601) – 867.3 (764.6) per 100,000 population which are now below the national average of 1,036.4 (940) per 100,000.

Reinfections data is now included within and also alongside infection totals for England and Northern Ireland. Data from Scotland and Wales will follow in the days ahead.
Professor Steven Riley, UKHSA’s Director General of Data and Analytics, said: “Reinfection remained at very low levels until the start of the Omicron wave. It is right that our daily reporting processes reflect how the virus has changed. We continue to see downward trends in case numbers and incidence of illness as we work to reduce the impact of the pandemic on our day-to-day lives. With vaccination still a great defence against infection and illness, please get jabbed as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, while four more inpatients have sadly died, inpatient numbers have fallen slightly from 39-38 while a total of 16 patients were discharged over the weekend.

*Cases definition to include multiple infection episodes from 31 January 2022
From 31 January 2022, UKHSA will move all COVID-19 case reporting in England to use a new episode-based definition that includes possible reinfections.

On the dashboard, this means:
reported cases now use the new definition in England and Northern Ireland
historical cases by report date have not been revised, so there has been a step increase in the cumulative numbers of cases
Cases by specimen date have been revised back to the beginning of the pandemic
the existing metric names have not changed
figures by report date for 31 January for regions and local authorities within England should not be used as they include all reinfections added today. Caution should also be used when looking at the 7-day totals and change figures presented on the postcode search page for the next 14 days. This file contains the correct newly reported cases numbers for regions and local authorities
new metrics have been created to show first episodes of infection (equivalent to the pre-31 January 2022 case definition) and episodes of possible reinfection, by specimen date only, initially for England and English regions and local authorities
Public Health Wales has reported cases by 42-day infection episodes throughout the pandemic. It intends to move to a 90-day episode length in the coming weeks
Public Health Scotland is currently using the pre-31 January 2022 cases definition but will move to the 90-day episode-based definition in the coming weeks
until definitions are fully aligned across the UK, the UK cases count will be a combination of each country’s cases by the definition they are currently using.
Deaths within 28 days of positive test and deaths within 60 days of positive test will also be updated on 1 February 2022 to include deaths following the most recent episode of infection using the new episode-based case definition in England.
