Council seeks views on the future of electric vehicles

Warrington Borough Council is seeking local people’s views on the future of electric vehicles.
The council has launched a new consultation on its Electric Vehicle Strategy, which aims to respond to the growing number of people who are switching to Electric or Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles.
Warrington’s Electric Vehicle Strategy will support the move from petrol or diesel to electric vehicles by 2030, which, in turn, will help address the climate emergency and improve air quality.
The six-week, on-line consultation gives you the opportunity to share your views on the strategy, have your say on how the council can best support residents and businesses to change to electric vehicles and let the council know where in the borough you’d like to see new EV charging points in the future.
Warrington’s Local Transport Plan (LTP4) sets out a range of measures to transform how people travel around Warrington, reduce carbon emissions and Improve air quality levels. There are a range of actions that are needed to decarbonise transport, such as increasing the numbers of people walking, cycling and using public transport. Transitioning to electric vehicles will also have an important role to play in complementing this modal shift.
Cabinet Member for transportation, highways and public realm, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “Through LTP4, we’ve committed to providing attractive alternatives to car travel. However, we recognise that motorised transport will continue to play a significant role in Warrington’s transport system.
“That’s why it’s vital that we support more residents, visitors, and businesses to make the switch away from traditional petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. Our Electric Vehicle Strategy supports this work.
“This consultation gives everyone the chance to have their say on how we can help break down barriers and give people the confidence to transition to electric vehicle ownership, including through the provision of more on-street charging points across the borough. Electric vehicles will be a key part of transport in the future, so please get involved in the consultation and share your views.”
Warrington Borough Council currently has two car parks which provide chargers for electric vehicles – 56 at our Time Square car park (one of the most extensive collections of points in a single location in the country); and a further 12 charging at Warrington West station.
In addition to these two car parks, the council is also currently working with Connected Kerb to install 30 new, on-street charging points at five locations (Gladstone Street, White Street, Lexden Street, Bewsey Street and Manchester Road). The council is also continuing to work to identify funding sources for more electric vehicle chargers in other suitable Warrington locations.
