Town’s MPs left devastated and heartbroken by killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess

WARRINGTON’S two MPs have paid tribute to Conservative MP Sir David Amess who died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in an Essex church earlier today.

Warrington South MP Andy Carter and Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols have been left “devastated” and “heartbroken” by the killing of the dedicated public servant.
Mr Carter tweeted: “Today’s news about the death of my friend and colleague Sir David Amess is truly devastating.
“David was an unbelievably kind and thoughtful man, a dedicated public servant who was committed to his constituency,
“My thoughts and prayers are with Sir David’s wife and family.”
Ms Nichols tweeted: “Heartbroken to receive the news that Sir David Amess MP has died after being stabbed at a constituency surgery. Any attack on elected officials carrying out their public duties is an affront to our very democracy.
“May his memory forever be a blessing to all those who loved him.”
The Tory MP died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery at a church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.
Police say a 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the stabbing.
They said a knife ahad been recovered and they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Sir David, 69, had been an MP since 1983 and was married with five children.
Sir David, who represented Southend West, was holding his constituency surgery – where voters can meet their MP and discuss issues and concerns – at Belfairs Methodist Church in Eastwood Road North.
The back bench MP was known politically as a social conservative and as a prominent campaigner against abortion and on animal welfare issues.
He was also known for his championing of Southend, including a long-running campaign to win city status for the town.
