FIREFIGHTERS involved in a battle to bring a blazing lorry carrying potato waffles under control on the M6 earlier today, have hit out at “irresponsible” drivers who put others at risk by filming the incident while driving.
Posting their views on social media firefighters from Birchwood said: “Crews were astonished to witness many drivers of cars, vans & hgvs actively filming the incident whilst driving.
“Not only is this irresponsible & dangerous it also put the Crews on the ground at risk.”
Eight crews were involved in the incident on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct which major disruption on the motorway network and local roads throughout the day.
Crews set up a water shuttle using 3 appliances to feed 2 base appliances to get the fire under control. Crews were on scene for 8 hours.
The blaze involved an HGV carrying potato waffles, bursting into flames on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway on Thelwall Viaduct. It resulted in delays throughout the day from around 7:15am this morning.
Police later confirmed the driver of the vehicle was not injured.
The exit road remained closed throughout the day while resurfacing works took place due to damage to the carriageway.
