Williams leads Wire to win at Magic Weekend

GEORGE Williams taunted fans of former club Wigan after scoring what turned out to be the decisive try for Warrington at the Magic Weekend.

Williams weaved through some weak tackling for the Wolves’ second try and then cupped his ear to the Warriors fans who had been given him abuse in his first game against them in his career.

That helped Warrington into a 10-0 lead after Josh Thewlis had opened the scoring early on at St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United FC.

Wigan, who won 22-0 against Castleford last weekend, got back in to the contest through Ethan Harvard’s converted score.

It was 10-6 at half time and remarkably that’s how it remained, with a scoreless second half.

Sam Halsall went close to levelling the scores when he was bundled in to touch off Jackson Hastings’ kick, while for the Wire, Jack Hughes had one ruled out by the video referee.

Warrington will more than likely finish third in the Super League table, giving them a home play-off eliminator.
