WORK has been completed on a long-awaited new annexe to St Wilfrid’s Church, Grappenhall.

A start has also been made on improvements to the church track and churchyard.
The Rector, the Rev Jane Proudfoot said: “This is a wonderful enhancement to a much-loved church in a picturesque and historic village.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming people when all the work is completed and the annexe is officially opened.
“It’s great to see what’s been accomplished, through the generosity of our congregation, grant funders and the local community. The pandemic has taken its toll on us all. We want to be a sign of hope as our community looks towards the future.”
Local resident Lynn Williamson said: “I have always lived locally and regularly attend St Wilfrid’s for services and social events. Families and guests coming to christenings, weddings and funerals can struggles it’s easy to trip or stumble on the existing track.
A smooth, safe surface will be beneficial and welcomed by all”.
St Wilfrid’s new annexe will provide a valuable resource to the church, neighbouring schools, and the entire village community. Much needed toilet facilities, a servery for refreshments, and a bright and welcoming meeting room will enable more people to access and use the church building for a variety of activities.
The church acts as a community hub for many local people and groups in the beautiful setting of the Grappenhall Conservation Area which attracts visitors and walkers alike.
In addition to making the access safer, the changes will improve the general appearance of the churchyard and provide additional parking for the village.
Churchwarden Linda Stockton added: “For the next couple of months, while the track is being improved, it may be more difficult to get through to the churchyard, but we hope that short-term inconvenience will lead to long-term benefits.
”The work to open up Safe Access for All at St Wilfrid’s Church is supported by Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, Cheshire Community Foundation and the Bernard Sunley Foundation, together with donations from many local people and businesses.
The Bishop of Chester will officially open the new facilities on October 17.
