WARRINGTON South MP Andy Carter is encouraging local residents to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day to honour and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of a generation who gave so much, so the country could be free from tyranny.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were numerous national and local events planned for the anniversary tomorrow, Friday, which had also been declared a Bank Holiday. However, despite the ongoing restrictions of lockdown, there are still many ways in which people can be involved in marking this occasion.
Andy is supporting the work of the Royal British Legion, which is calling on individuals and communities to come together during key moments to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War generation.
At 11am on Friday, the Legion is encouraging people across all generations and communities to take part in a national moment of remembrance and pause for a two minute silence, in a socially distanced way, to honour the service and sacrifice of the Second World War generation, and also take the opportunity to reflect on the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on so many lives across the world.
Mr Carter said: “This year’s Early May Bank Holiday would have seen communities right across Warrington, and the nation, come together to mark this special anniversary. However, despite the restrictions that Covid-19 brings, it is perhaps more important than ever that we make the time to remember this pivotal moment in our history.
“As you celebrate at home – and I hope you will celebrate – I hope you will reflect on the strength and courage of the previous generation and bring it to your own life as you remain under what remains of the lockdown.
“It is an opportunity to honour and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of a generation who gave so much so that we could be free from tyranny. We can commemorate and stay safe.”

As reported throughout the week on warrington-worldwide various residents and groups have VE Day celebrations planned, with social distancing measures in place.
