ONE Warrington couple will be making sure lockdown doesn’t spoil their VE Day celebrations as they prepare to dress to impress and put out the bunting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

Lesley and Alan Bates wil be dresssing in period coustumes and getting out their Willys jeep to mark the occasion at their Old Hall home.
Lesley said: “We will be donning our finest 1940s attire getting our Willys jeep out on the drive and decorating the driveway with bunting and a banner I have made. We will be playing music from the 40s and may have a dance or two.
“We have invited the neighbours to join us, at a sociable distance of course, to celebrate with home made tea cakes/scones. So let’s hope the weather is kind to us.”
As well as displaying the WW2 jeep on their driveway they are also taking it to Warrington Royal Mail mail centre at Omega and putting on a small display of items to commemorate VE Day on Thursday 7th 11-5pm and will be raising money for charity on that day too.

Friday, May 8th marks the 75th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, marking the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender in 1945.
Due to the current restrictions, VE75 events and street parties across the country have had to be cancelled or postponed, but people can still mark the occasion, share their pride in our country and the efforts of all the allies and honour the men and women of World War II.

Have you got any special plans to mark the occasion in Warrington? If so please email us details and any photos to [email protected] and mark it “VE Day celebrations”.

Warrington Borough Council has put out information online showing how people can join in the celebrations.
