Let’s avoid transferring the “jungle” of Bridge Street into the new Time Square

NO-ONE suggests that Warrington’s new Time Square leisure hub, should be an alcohol-free zone.

It was always intended there should be bars and restaurants there, as well as a cinema, and there is nothing better than a civilised drink to make a meal go down well.

But it is worrying to see planners recommending – before the scheme is anywhere near completed – amended proposals to allow more “drinking establishments.”

They will, apparently,  make the area more attractive to potential operators who require a high footfall and “vibrancy.”

Does this mean potential operators are in short supply?

If increased availability of alcohol will make Time Square more attractive to them, what sort of operators will we be getting?

We all want to see Time Square succeed. But to to so, it must appeal to all sections of the community. We must be careful to avoid the possibility of transferring the “jungle” that Bridge Street often becomes at night into the new centre.
