TALENTED young athletes have just a few days left to apply for a popular scheme that offers them vital training and support for free.

LiveWire’s Athlete Development Programme helps up and coming young athletes over the age of 14 achieve their maximum potential on the sports pitch, running track or in the swimming pool by giving them free access to the organisation’s training facilities in Warrington – including three neighbourhood hubs and three leisure centres.

Those selected to take part also receive bespoke training programmes tailored to the specific needs of their chosen sport, and general lifestyle advice.

Around 30 athletes benefited from this year’s scheme, across a variety of sports including swimming, rugby league, tennis and athletics.

Applications close on Wednesday 31st October for the 2018/19 programme.

One of this year’s athletes is Jack Booth, who plays Handball for Great Britain’s Under-18 team.

Jack, of Great Sankey, recently returned from playing for GB at a tournament in Portugal, at which the team won the bronze medal. Jack was injured playing in the tournament, and his recovery since his return has been helped by using the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub gym.

Jack, who has just turned 18, said: “It has been a great opportunity and a real privilege to be involved in LiveWire’s Athlete Development Scheme.

“Taking part has had a positive impact on both my sporting and personal development – both mentally and physically. I’d definitely recommend that others apply, as even getting shortlisted will be a real boost to your self-confidence and commitment to your sport.

“The support in terms of free use of the facilities is very important as it frees up funds that can be spent on other aspects of your training and sport, such as equipment.”

James Birdsey, Operations Manager for LiveWire, said: “LiveWire has been running this scheme for 5 years now and it’s fantastic for us to have been able to support so many local, aspiring athletes. We have excellent facilities available to us, but it’s the staff expertise in exercise, nutrition and even anti-doping protocols which are provided to the athletes, which makes the scheme so valued to those involved.”
