Local racing champion Joe Charlton was hoping for pole position when he returned to the track Easter Sunday for the start of the British Karting Championships at Glan-y-Gors, near Betws-y-coed, North Wales.
Joe, 24, who is sponsored by JD Kitchens raced his Tony Kart with Vortex engine for the first time in six months and was keen to get back behind the wheel, but was caught up in a start line incident moving him from a starting position of 6 on the grid to 13, finishing at a respectable 7th place.
He said; “Sunday’s race was close and very intense, and whilst I didn’t finish in the position I had aimed for it has spurred me on to train harder and lead the next stage on 22 April”.
Joe, who is regularly first around the track, began karting aged 10. He follows in the footsteps of formula one legends Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, who began their careers karting, Jenson winning the British Championship in 1991.
Joe’s sponsor Dave Charlton from JD Kitchens was there to cheer him on. “We’re proud of Joe’s winning attitude and his commitment to the sport. He’s taken six months out to concentrate on his engineering studies and Sunday’s racing proves that he has what it takes”.
Joe is next in action on April 22 at Fullbeck Lincolnshire.
