Holocaust Memorial Day

A SOLITARY candle of remembrance will be lit at the town hall to mark Friday’s national Holocaust Memorial Day on behalf of the citizens of Warrington.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Les Morgan will be lighting the candle this Friday, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, in 1945.

Cllr Morgan says: “Holocaust Memorial Day allows us to reflect on one of humanity’s darkest episodes and to hope and pray that we never witness anything like it again.

“It is also a reminder that genocide does not just begin by accident. It is the tragic end of a process that begins when discrimination, racism and hatred of minorities goes unchallenged. Today we also remember victims of genocide the world over.”

Cllr Morgan will be joined by Mayor’s chaplain and Rector of Warrington The Rev Paul Wilson for a short ceremony at 11.30am.
