“Use your seatbelt – or lose your life”

“USE your seatbelt or lose your life” – that’s the message from Cheshire police as they step up the next phase of a major roads policing operation.
Operation Fatal Four is running throughout April and is designed to reinforce the rules of the road. Officers are targeting four of the main contributory factors linked to death or injury on the roads – drink/drug driving, speeding, using technology while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
Drivers or passengers not wearing a seatbelt is one of the biggest killers on the road.
All this month, officers are keeping a close eye out for this and, anyone committing this offence will be stopped and dealt with accordingly, with the aim of highlighting the dangers and consequences involved.
It was made the law for all drivers and passengers to wear a seatbelt more than 30 ago, however, there are some who still flout this. Officers enforce this legislation all year round, but are placing a special focus on it this month to educate road users about the importance of wearing a seatbelt while driving.
Inspector Steve Griffiths, of the Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Despite the requirement by law and the well-known risks involved in not wearing a seatbelt, there are still many individuals who think that they are exempt from the rules.
“Wearing a seatbelt halves the risk of death in a collision, so why would you not wear it?
“It can prove to be fatal if you do not follow the guidance set out by the law. Your seatbelt is there for a reason – it could save your life.”
