PLANNING chiefs at Warrington  have thrown out controversial proposals to build two shops on a pub car park.
Members of the borough’s development management committee rejected the scheme for the Chapel House pub at Burtonwood after hearing of strong objections from council leader, Cllr Terry O’Neill.
He told the committee: “I want to put on public record my strong objection to this development. This is the fourth application for this site, all have been refused and the applicant has also lost on appeal.
“As before, they are trying to shoe-horn two shops on to a pub car park, with the pub remaining open.
“This is opposite one of the busiest junctions on the only extremely busy main road running through the village, opposite a local primary school which has its own parking problems at dropping off and picking up times.”
Cllr Sheila Woodyatt said it was “disgraceful” that the applicants had submitted another proposal after so many earlier ones had been refused.
The committee was told 29 letters had been sent to the council – 17 in support and 11 against.
Planning officers recommended the scheme be refused because of insufficient information to demonstrate it would not cause harm to highway safety.
