Opposition to cocktail bar plan

PLANS for a first floor cocktail bar and light refreshments establishment in Common Lane, Culcheth are being opposed by Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council.
The scheme involves changing the use of existing offices above the Indian Tiffin restaurant – although the offices have been unused for more than five years.
The parish council says the applicant has no indication of the likely number of users of the cocktail bar and the access staircase is inadequate and potentially dangerous.
They also fear noise and disturbance for nearby residents and an increase in existing parking problems.
But planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved and point out that the nearest residential properties are 56 metres away in Thompson Avenue.
They believe the proposal, given that it is in a neighbourhood centre, is acceptable, subject to conditions.
The existing offices had been marketed since 2011 without success and it was believed potential tenants had been put off by the possibility of noise and smells from the restaurant below.
It appeared an office use was, therefore, unviable and that a change of use to a cocktail bar would enhance the overall vitality of the neighbourhood centre.
There would be no changes to the external appearance of the property.
A report to the borough council’s development management committee states the new business would have six staff, including two part-timers.

  1. Do we not want choices or local Businesses in our village?

No idea why this is being opposed, seems like some people don’t like change.

  2. Think it might be because the pit stop wants to close later at weekends and be a cocktail bar as well… along with the Common Room, it would really attract a lot of people from out of the area. Possibly very noisy?

  3. I would welcome this, as long as it’s a cocktail bar that serves real cocktails. We already have people coming from out of the area and the noise would be no different to what it is now with the Cherry Tree and the Common Room being just a door or two down the same road. The village needs more cosmopolitan type bars & cafes in my opinion.

  4. Will make absolutely no difference as regards noise or people than there already is. If anything it will give villagers more choice. The opposition to it is just plain ridiculous.
