“We were gagged” say councillors

ANGRY Liberal Democrat councillors claim they were “gagged” when they raised the issue of traffic congestion in Warrington at a meeting of the borough council.

Cllr Brian Axcell (pictured), the Lib Dem spokesman on transport claimed the controlling Labour group cut short the debate, preventing the Lib Dem leader and deputy leader, Cllr Bob Barr and Cllr Peter Walker, from speaking.

Cllr Axcell said: “This was a disgraceful abuse of power.

“Labour is obviously very sensitive about traffic congestion on our roads, which Warrington residents know is getting worse, not better.

“In the short term Lib Dems want live information on road congestion and advice on alternative routes to be available to motorists whenever traffic congestion occurs.

“In the longer term the council needs a comprehensive strategy for dealing with this blight on our lives.

It is very clear that Labour do not even want to talk about the issue.”

Cllr Axcell had put a motion to the meeting calling on the council to ensure the town’s congestion problem, and steps to mitigate it, were openly and transparently shared with the general public and potential investors and that a long term plan for reducing congestion across the town be published and progress on the plan  monitored and made public.
