Town braces itself for severe weather

THE Met Office has issued a Level 2 cold weather alert across the North West – and Warrington Borough Council is reminding people to look out for the vulnerable and take care when out and about.
A Level 2 alert means that within the next 48 hours, there is a 60 per cent chance of severe weather, with average temperatures of 2C or below.
The council’s public health team is promoting messages to help people stay warm and well during cold weather.
Severe cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young or very old or those with serious medical conditions.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, the council’s lead member for public health and wellbeing said:  “It is important to stay warm, well and safe. Residents should check weather forecasts before heading out, ensure they wear lots of thin layers, and have plenty of warm food and drinks to stay warm. They should also wear shoes with a good, slip-resistant grip to prevent any accidental falls.
“It’s also important for people to stay warm indoors particularly those who are 65 or over, have long term health conditions, or young children.”
Advice on how to reduce the risk either for yourself or somebody you know can be obtained from the winter health pages at NHS Choices, www.nhs.uk, or from your local chemist. If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.
Any disruption to council services including bin collections, school/road closures will be posted on the council website at www.warrington.gov.uk/winter
