29,000 earn less than the living wage

MORE than a quarter of jobs in Warrington – a total of around 29,000 – pay less than the living wage.
About 11,000 of these are in the north of the borough.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones has revealed the figures after receiving a reply from the Treasury, based on figures from the UK Statistics Authority, in response to a Parliamentary question.
The figures,  which the UK Statistics Authority suggest are “likely to be slight underestimates” show that 26.7 per cent of jobs in Warrington pay less than the living wage and 22.5 per cent of jobs in her constituency pay less than the living wage.
Ms Jones, a long time campaigner for the Living Wage said: “It is quite outrageous that, in the 21st Century, people are working for less than the living wage.
“I am glad that Warrington Borough Council has agreed to ensure all employees receive at least the living wage.  We now need the council to use its procurement process to ensure its contractors do the same and we need people to use their power as consumers and not to buy from companies who will not pay their staff a living wage.”
