Pitch boost for disabled and female footballers

DISABLED and female footballers are to be given a boost by the development of facilities at both Great Sankey Leisure Centre and Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.

LiveWire have worked with six clubs to look at their requirements for pitch access, so they can provide training opportunities for almost 1,500 people of all ages, ability and genders.

The new programmes will support Crosfields Football Club, Cromwell Athletic FC, Matthiola FC, Orford FC, Whittle Hall FC and Warrington Wolverines FC with their aspirations to grow and increase opportunities for people to participate in football.

Some of the clubs will also soon benefit from a new 3G pitch at Great Sankey Leisure Centre which is part of the £16 million redevelopment to turn the existing centre into a Neighbourhood Hub.

LiveWire hope that by working with the clubs more closely they can specifically address some of the inequality in participation that they currently see amongst women and girls and disability groups.

Matthew Park, LiveWire’s Sports Engagement and Outreach Officer, said: “LiveWire are committed to working with community clubs as we recognise the vital role they play in providing opportunities for people to participate in a wide range of sport and physical activities.

“The Active Warrington strategy emphasises the need to support and build the capacity of clubs and we firmly believe that the changes we have implemented at the artificial grass pitches both at Great Sankey Leisure Centre and Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub will be of huge benefit to the six football clubs involved and deliver an increase in participation locally.”

Alice Watson, County Development Manager for Liverpool County FA, said: “We are pleased that LiveWire are working closely with local charter standard clubs and hope that this work will support growth in identified areas of the game, specifically female and disability football, and look to increase weekly participation.

“We look forward to working closely with LiveWire to develop the facilities further for football on site to the benefit of local clubs as part of the Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub development.”
