Wolves crash to another disappointing defeat

WARRINGTON Wolves crashed to another disappointing defeat as they went down 36-10 at Hull KR, further denting their hopes of making the top four.

The Wolves took the lead in the 10th minute after Daryl Clark charged the ball down allowing Ashton Sims to send Chris Hill under the sticks, with Declan Patton, adding his first ever conversion from in front of the sticks.

But four unanswered tries from the hosts in a 17 minute spell either side of the break left the Wolves rocking.

After Warrington’s early try Rovers had most of the play but couldn’t find a way through a hard working defence.

But five minutes from the interval winger Ken Sio outpaced the Warrington cover to go in at the corner with Josh Mantellato just failing to add the extras from out wide.

But three minutes later Rovers were in front. Joel Monaghan took a high ball but then lost possession following an unfortunate clash of heads with Kris Welham allowing Mantellato to score. He then converted his own try to make it 10-6 at the interval.

When the teams returned it was nearly all Rovers as lively full back Dixon cut through Warrington’s defence to fly in for a spectacular try behind the sticks. Mantellato was again on target to make it 16-6.

Things went from bad to worse for Warrington on 53 minutes when Gene Ormsby failed to collect a high kick from the lively Albert Kelly, with Sio palming the ball back to Liam Salter to score. Mantellato again added the extras.

Warrington briefly responded when Stefan Ratchford put Ormsby in at the corner making it 22-10.

But back came Rovers as Warrington old boy and Rovers’ skipper for the night Tyrone McCarthy latched onto a kick through to touch down. Mantellato missed the conversion but added a penalty shortly after to make it 28-10 and game over.

With the Warrington defence clearly tiring Rovers had time to add one more try when Welham forced his way over from close range and Mantellato  goaled before adding another penalty in the last minute to bring the curtain down on a dismal night for the Wolves.
