Sex attack on 13-year-old girl

POLICE at Warrington today appealed for help from the public following a serious sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl.
The incident is believed to have taken place at about 2.15pm on Saturday, May 9 when the girl was making her way towards Birchwood Railway Station.
She walked through an alleyway between houses on Lyster Close to access a footpath which runs parallel to the railway line through a wooded area.
As the girl walked down the path in the direction of the station she was grabbed from behind and subjected to a serious sexual assault.
Following the incident the offender left the scene.
The offender was aged 15-22, of medium build and about 5ft 8 inches tall. He spoke with a local accent and smelled of cigarettes. He was wearing a tracksuit with a hooded top which had back writing on, along with grey pants and black Nike trainers.
The incident was reported to police on Wednesday this week and a full investigation has been launched with enquiries currently underway to trace the offender.
Police are appealing for anyone who has any information about the incident or anyone who may have been in the area around that time and has seen anything significant or anyone acting suspiciously to come forward.
Detective Inspector Clare Coleman said: “We are currently carrying out a number of enquiries and are urging local people to cast their minds back to see if they can remember anything significant, which might assist with the investigation.
“The victim is currently receiving support from both her family and specialist trained officers.”
Inspector Keith Logan, of Warrington East Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “We always urge people to follow basic safety advice when out and about – remain vigilant when walking alone especially at night, maintain an awareness of your surroundings and try and stick to well-lit areas. Report any suspicious behaviour to police immediately.”
