WARRINGTON Wolves successfully navigated past Championship side Dewsbury Rams to reach the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

Chris Bridge scored 16 points, including six conversions, as Tony Smith’s men ran in 10 tries to see off their lower league opponents 52-10.

In front of a 4,677 crowd at the Tetley’s Stadium, hooker Brad Dwyer gave Warrington the lead with a try on seven minutes, in what was his third appearance against the Rams this season, having spent the past few months on loan at London Broncos before being recalled by his parent club this week to deputise for the injured Daryl Clark. Micky Higham, who was subject of an audacious transfer bid by Championship league leaders Leigh, was rested leaving Dwyer to run the game from dummy half.

The Rams were missing playmaker Brett Seymour, cup-tied following a previous appearance for Whitehaven, and were without Super League hooker Wayne Godwin, recently re-signed by Salford on loan to cover for their injury woes.

They reduced arrears to 4-2 thanks to a James Delaney penalty, but by the time they managed their first try through Joel Farrell on the half hour mark, Warrington were well in control.

Four tries in a blistering 10 minute spell for Ryan Atkins, Ashton Sims, Ben Currie and Dec Patton helped the Wolves to a 26-8 half time lead.

The returning Kevin Penny added a brace in quick succession at the beginning of the second half and then Bridge grabbed his score to stretch the lead to 44-8.

Currie’s second, plus a converted try for Richie Myler, completed Warrington’s scoring before Delaney added his third goal of the evening at the death.

The win puts Warrington in the last eight alongside St Helens, comfortable winners of League One side York on Friday, and Hull KR, who shocked Wigan 16-12 at Leigh Sports Village to avenge their recent 60-0 Super League thumping at the hands of the Warriors.
