WITH the General Election finishing line in sight the key Warrington South seat is too close to call – with party insiders believing it could even go to a recount!
Currently held by David Mowat for Conservatives – it is considered a key seat nationally which Labour must win if it is to obtain a majority in the House of Commons. It is number 22 on Labour’s hit list.
Mr Mowat successfully fought off Nick Bent five years ago, but Mr Bent has stayed in Warrington and continued to campaign in the constituency.
Lib-Dem Bob Barr has proclaimed it is a “three horse race.”
warrington-worldwide will be at the election count throughout the night.
Six candidates are contesting the seat and there is much conjecture on what influence UKIP and the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition candidates will have on the final result.
The six candidates, in alphabetical order, are:
Bob Barr (Liberal Democrat), Kevin Bennett (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition), Nick Bent (Labour), Stephanie Davies (Green Party), Mal Lingley (UKIP) and David Mowat (Conservative).
The result is expected around 4.30am on Friday – but could be later if a recount is required.
At the last General Election in 2010, David Mowat won the seat for the Conservatives with 35.8 per cent of the vote, polling 19,641 votes to Nick Bent’s 18,088 for Labour – a majority of 1,553.
Jo Crotty for the Liberal Democrats polled 15,094.
Meanwhile in Warrington North – normally a rock-solid Labour constituency, no shocks are expected. The line-up is: Sarah Hayes (Green Party), Helen Jones (Labour Party), Stefan Krizanac (Liberal Democrat), Trevor Nicholls (UKIP) and Richard Short (Conservative).
At the last General Election, Helen Jones held the seat for Labour with 20,135 votes – 45.5 per cent of the poll. Paul Campbell came second for the Conservatives with 13,365 while Dave Eccles, Liberal Democrat came third with 9,196.
The Labour majority was 6,771.
Town Hall officials believe the result will be declared around 4.30am.
