Stay safe in the sun this summer

GET “Sun Smart” this summer – that’s the message from Warrington Borough Council in the run up to Sun Awareness Week.
The week is organised by the British Association of Dermatologists and aims to raise awareness of skin cancer.
Skin cancer is one of the most likely cancers in the UK and in 2010, around 100,000 people were diagnosed with it.
Cancer Research UK has found that getting just one painful sunburn every two years can triple the risk of developing the most serious form of skin cancer. There are three main types of skin cancer but malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form, because it is more likely to spread to other parts of the body.
More than eight out of 10 melanomas in the UK – around 11,100 cases every year – are linked to too much exposure to ultraviolet rays from either sunlight or using sunbeds.
Warrington’s director of public health, Dr Rita Robertson (pictured) said: “Avoid spending time in the sun between 11am and 3pm. Use plenty of sunscreen when you do go out in the sun so that you don’t burn. Use sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of at least 15, and has a high star rating of four or more.
“When in the sun, cover up with a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses, and remember to take extra care with children.  And avoid using sun beds
we know that these are directly linked to skin cancer, so think before you book.”
There are many ways to reduce the risks of getting skin cancer – including avoiding sunbeds.
Skin should be checked regularly for moles or patches of skin that are growing, changing shape, developing new colours or are enflamed, bleeding, crusting or itching.
It is a good idea to take photographs to keep track of any changes.
If any of these changes are noticed a doctor should be seen because early diagnosis makes treatment easier.
