AN innovative £190 million scheme to regenerate part of central Warrington – offering homes, leisure, education and business opportunities – has been given the green light by council chiefs.
The development is expected create up to 1,000 construction jobs over the next decade and nearly 4,000 new permanent jobs when fully completed in 2024.
Warrington Borough Council has approved an outline masterplan for the regeneration of the 36.43 Ha (90 acre) Stadium Quarter site just north of the town centre.
The project will connect the bus interchange with the Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium and create a new, vibrant mixed-use development.
The council has appointed and will work in conjunction with, joint venture partner Iliad to deliver the scheme.
Phase one of the project, comprising £87 million investment, is at an advanced stage and work will start on site next January.
The project will be managed by Warrington & Co., which was established to act as a partnership between the council, business leaders and key organisations, to deliver regeneration strategies and facilitate growth in the town.
Plans for the Stadium Quarter are currently in draft form and will be finalised following further consultation with stakeholders. Iliad is one of the UK’s leading independent development organisations, and has vast experience in regeneration and managing complex sites.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, (Pictured right) leader of the council, said: “This marks the start of a very exciting chapter in the regeneration of our town centre and forms part of our ambitious plans to breathe new life into the area. Iliad has an excellent track record of urban regeneration and we are looking forward to working with them and delivering this scheme.”
Steve Park, managing director of Warrington & Co., said: “Warrington is booming economically as we outstrip our rivals. Omega is already well underway and it is great to be bringing forward this town centre scheme and revitalising and re-energising this core area of town.”

  1. Fabulous news. After many years of neglect this part of the town and its people can now look forward to the investment that will take Warrington into the future. Anyone who criticises this development can not realise how important this is for the town.

well done to the council leaders for the progress in this matter
